On covering by translates of a set

چکیده
In this paper we study the minimal number τ(S,G) of translates of an arbitrary subset S of a group G needed to cover the group, and related notions of the efficiency of such coverings. We focus mainly on finite subsets in discrete groups, reviewing the classical results in this area, and generalizing them to a much broader context. For example, we show that while the worst-case efficiency when S has k elements is of order 1/ log k, for k fixed and n large, almost every k-subset of any given n-element group covers G with close to optimal efficiency.

Packing and Covering by Translates of Certain Nonconvex Bodies
We develop techniques for determining the packing and covering constants for star bodies composed of cubes. In the theory of convex sets problems of tiling, packing, and covering by translates of a given set have a long history, with the main focus on the packing and covering by spheres. Only in a few cases is the densest packing or sparsest covering known, even in the case of the sphere, excep...
متن کاملA set-covering formulation for a drayage problem with single and double container loads
This paper addresses a drayage problem, which is motivated by the case study of a real carrier. Its trucks carry one or two containers from a port to importers and from exporters to the port. Since up to four customers can be served in each route, we propose a set-covering formulation for this problem where all possible routes are enumerated. This model can be efficiently solved to optimality b...
متن کاملMultigranulation single valued neutrosophic covering-based rough sets and their applications to multi-criteria group decision making
In this paper, three types of (philosophical, optimistic and pessimistic) multigranulation single valued neutrosophic (SVN) covering-based rough set models are presented, and these three models are applied to the problem of multi-criteria group decision making (MCGDM).Firstly, a type of SVN covering-based rough set model is proposed.Based on this rough set model, three types of mult...
متن کاملA Local Branching Approach for the Set Covering Problem
The set covering problem (SCP) is a well-known combinatorial optimization problem. This paper investigates development of a local branching approach for the SCP. This solution strategy is exact in nature, though it is designed to improve the heuristic behavior of the mixed integer programming solver. The algorithm parameters are tuned by design of experiments approach. The proposed method is te...
متن کاملTOPOLOGICALLY STATIONARY LOCALLY COMPACT SEMIGROUP AND AMENABILITY
In this paper, we investigate the concept of topological stationary for locally compact semigroups. In [4], T. Mitchell proved that a semigroup S is right stationary if and only if m(S) has a left Invariant mean. In this case, the set of values ?(f) where ? runs over all left invariant means on m(S) coincides with the set of constants in the weak* closed convex hull of right translates of f. Th...
متن کاملMore on Decomposing Coverings by Octants
In this note we improve our upper bound given in [7] by showing that every 9-fold covering of a point set in R by finitely many translates of an octant decomposes into two coverings, and our lower bound by a construction for a 4-fold covering that does not decompose into two coverings. We also prove that certain dynamic interval coloring problems are equivalent to the above question. The same b...
